Simple Halloween Pumpkin Carving

pumpkin-print.gif (17318 bytes)It seems like all the sites on the web for pumpkin carving want to show you the most elaborate designs and stencils for carving your pumpkin. This site is all about a simple jack o'lantern shape no stencil need to carve this pumpkin just do it free hand, However if you prefer a stencil to carve your pumpkin just print out the one on the right >>>>>>>> Happy Halloween!

Find yourself a nice large pumpkin to carve without to many blemishes and the right shape, be careful not to bruise your pumpkin or hold it by the stem ( such as the one I used this year, which the stem had broken off ). Start by making a deep zig-zag cut around the top of the pumpkin, with a sharp long bladed knife, I like to go round once and then go round again to make sure I have cut deep enough and have cut clean all the corners.

When you have cut all around the top of the pumpkin turn it over and make a small hole in the bottom, insert a long piece of wire or something similar and poke out the top you just cut. When the top is removed use a spoon to scrape out the seeds and the loose flesh from inside the pumpkin, some people like to put this coming out of the mouth of the pumpkin once it is carved to make it look like vomit, not me though!. Then put the top back on and start to cut out the eyes and nose, if they are off centered don't worry as it adds to the effect of your carved pumpkin once you have a candle in it.

When the eyes are cut thru push them into the pumpkin along with the nose, then begin cutting out the mouth, always make the mouth smaller than you think as it is easy to cut more away later, than it is to try and cover up where you have cut away too much. When the mouth is finished take the top off the carved pumpkin again and remove all the bits you pushed in, some people like to rub the inside with Vaseline which they say helps it keep longer, I have not tried this though. Light your pumpkin with small tea light candles, I like to leave the top off and use it to sit the pumpkin on. I have decorated this carved pumpkin using some flashing horns from last year, they really add to the scary effect and give it a nice red glow.
